Best Places To See Fall Foliage in the Hudson Valley


Autumn is peeking slowly around the corner, and with it will begin the time when nature reminds us how beautiful it is to let things go. It’s also the time when apple cider donuts and fall foliage are aplenty. It’s such a vibrant and wonderful time of year. This area of New York is magical during the autumn months and is an excellent destination if you’re looking for a family reunion location. There are many festivities in the area, including pumpkin patches, apple orchards, and festivals.

If you and your family find yourself in the Hudson Valley come this fall, these are the best places to see fall foliage.

Route 9W up Storm King Mountain

This route will provide you with several scenic overlooks at the panoramic views of the foliage below. Drive the course in the direction from Fort Montgomery toward Cornwall.

Train Ride on the Catskill Mountain Road

The train ride is a fun and unique experience for kids and adults alike. This idea is particularly great if you have the whole extended family together. Pile everyone into either an open or closed car and enjoy the vibrant views. The train boards in Kingston, and you’ll journey on the former Ulster and Delaware Railroad Corridor.

In addition to the regular “Catskill Fall Foliage Train,” they offer the “Pumpkin Express” a few days during the season. Passengers are allowed to pick a pumpkin to take home and decorate.

Hunter Mountain

During the fall, you’re able to take the ski lift to the top of Hunter Mountain to take in the breathtaking scenery of the Hudson Valley. The ride takes approximately 10 minutes, and it’s incredibly worth it.

Route 9 Beginning in Hyde Park

Begin driving north on Route 9, starting in Hyde Park. The scenery will drastically change and provide you with some incredible views of fall foliage in the Hudson Valley.

Route 9 is the longest north-south highway in New York, and it forks off into Route 9G between the cities of Rhinebeck and Red Hook. The drive from Hyde Park to Hudson is around an hour long. There are multiple places to stop and take in autumn along the way.

The Hudson Valley is along the Hudson River is near New York City. Many counties and cities make up the valley, and it’s a gorgeous area to visit, move to, and get to know.
