Interview: Meet, Play and Love Across America

Planning Tips

One man’s idea to bring travel closer to all of us.

The idea hatched on a recent road trip from California to Florida. The Meet Play Love to Travel Tour is the brainchild of Roy Edmondson, a tourism marketing executive who was driving cross country amid the COVID-19 pandemic. “I saw the devastation in small towns across America and I thought to myself, is there some way I can help?” On that trip, Edmondson hatched his plan get the travel industry back when it’s ready.

He came up with the idea based on a play of words from the popular Julia Roberts movie Eat Pray Love. It covers three sectors of the travel industry – meetings, sports and general tourism.

He’s now plotting course, trying to hit 40 cities across the country in 40 days, traveling by motorhome. In the process he wants to introduce Americans to many of our hidden jewels and raffle off 40 vacation giveaways in the process. “I want to get people excited about traveling again,” said Edmondson.

This trip also will be a unique experience for Edmondson, who’s never traveled in a motorhome before.

Initial reaction has been strong. “Everyone wants to get the travel industry back on its feet again,” Edmondson said. Plans are for an August launch with a route based on participation from area Destinations Marketing Organizations.

During his day-long visit in each place, Edmondson will share interesting activities, meal stops and points of interest. “We’re going to let the destination decide what they want to showcase, what they want to highlight, what messaging, attractions and restaurants. It’s really up to them,” he added.

This trip comes at an ideal time, as the federal government is considering a tax credit of up to $4,000 per person for Americans taking a vacation in our homeland. “This might be the first time they get in their cars or RVs. We want to make sure we highlight these places,” Edmondson continued.

Destinations interested in participating in the Meet Play Love to Travel Tour will help publicize the event and drive vacation giveaways in their city.
