Halifax, North Carolina

Nestled on the banks of the mighty Roanoke River, which gave rise to commerce in the area, we like to say, “rushing river water can take the edges off rocks and people.” We are confident you will find that true and that you will enjoy a relaxing event reconnecting with family members here.

Conveniently located on Interstate 95, midway between New York and Florida, the Halifax County Convention & Visitors Bureau is excited to help make your family reunion memorable.

The natural landscape of the county provides a host of recreational activities, from Lake Gaston, a 34-mile man-made lake, and Medoc Mountain State Park, a 2,300-acre natural wildlife preserve, to golfing and tennis, there is something for everyone in Halifax County.

Roanoke Rapids offers a wide variety of accommodations to meet your group’s needs. Attractions such as Sylvan Heights Bird Park (which features more than 2,500 birds from around the world including ducks, geese, parrots, toucans and flamingos), Roanoke Rapids Lake (a 4,600-acre lake that is perfect for an afternoon of kayaking, bird watching and fishing) and the Roanoke Canal Trail and Museum (featuring exhibits and locally donated artifacts portraying life along the Roanoke River during its lifetime) will keep your reunion busy.

Often called North Carolina’s “cradle of history,” Historic Halifax is the birthplace of the Halifax Resolves, a document that gave rise to the creation of the Declaration of Independence. This is a must-see for anyone visiting the area along with the Halifax County Underground Rail Trail. The Roanoke Rapids Theater (a 1,500-seat entertainment venue that hosts some of the best acts on the East Coast including country, rock, blues, jazz and R&B performers) awaits your family members to offer a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Halifax County, NC is the perfect place to hold a family reunion. I planned my first combined Hockaday Family of Halifax County, NC reunion in 2018. I did not start planning until March 2018 and only expected about 50 people to come on the last weekend in September. Word spread fast, and that number grew to over 300 people. Lori Medlin and her staff at VisitHalifax NC helped me find accommodations and facilities for that large number, assisted with maps, activities and a welcome reception among other things. Historic Halifax gave us special tours and even allowed us a temporary exhibit to house our artifacts for the weekend of the reunion to share with our attendees and the public.
